Islanders Stepping Out in Missions!
It
is happening! Our mission has always been to minister to islanders in such
a way that we provide them with inspiration to get involved in missions
themselves. All of your prayers, your giving, and years of pouring
ourselves into this island are bearing fruit. The church that we have been
serving— First Assembly, is enthusiastically reaching out on regular
service projects to the poor of the island.
Pastor Jimmy is zealously leading this initiative. He
has been taking “scouting” trips asking the Holy Spirit to lead him,
and he has been discovering elderly widows who desperately need help. Mrs.
Mortimer is in her 80’s and is barley able to get around her house. Mrs.
Cartwright her neighbor, who is old herself, helps her by hauling water
from their well up a steep, rocky hill, and by chopping bush so her friend
can have wood to cook with. Neither widow has electricity, running water,
or any other modern convenience. Mrs. Mortimer especially has almost no
help from family.
We have now taken several of these trips to do
renovation projects on the ladies’ badly deteriorating houses. Each trip
has 20-30 church members participating—not bad for a church of a regular
attendance of around 60! The enthusiasm, zeal and commitment of these
island believers is strong and growing. Our hope is that as this mission
initiative continues to flourish, we will be able load up the team and
school buses onto ships and take these outreaches to other islands. Please
pray that this will happen, and that the mission zeal of our island
friends will grow even stronger.
